AWAKE but SLEEPY

Exhibition Branding
Visual Identity
The exhibition visual identity was created for Japanese artist Shuhei Fukushima's solo show. His sculptural work is inspired by everyday sights in Japan, specifically the quiet periods of rest or suspension during construction, relocation, or transition. In these kinds of situations, blue plastic sheets tied with green tape or rope are frequently used to cover inanimate objects such as sculptures, automobiles, or tools, expressing a condition of both sleep and alertness.

Fukushima's artworks capture this undetermined temporality. The forms are made of materials including inkjet-printed pongee cloth, epoxy resin, and glass fiber, and they resemble covered things. Despite being empty on the inside, they remain upright due to resin structures, representing presence without substance and allowing viewers to think about the balance between physical reality and their imagined meaning.

For the exhibition visuals, I was inspired by Fukushima's use of green plastic tape. This element became the key graphic theme, utilized not only visually but also conceptually to "seal" or "pause" the exhibition images, implying that the show is ready to be unwrapped or woken by the viewer's presence. This visual approach represents the fundamental idea of Fukushima's work: an investigation into stillness, expectation, and the fragile fragility of everyday life.
